Reflection: Intervention and Extension Journaling About Place Value - Section 2: Active Engagement


In the last video clip, you observed the work of one of my students who is challenged by organizing thinking, communicating understanding, and multiple step processes.  With the help of the Learning Resource Center teacher, we modified the "way" the work looks, but not the thinking and end product. 

Oftentimes, I think, teachers believe that modifying or adapting work means creating something completely different.  I disagree with this.  I believe that sometimes it is just a matter of putting on paper or speaking in a more or differently organized way.  

Everyone can learn, and everyone enjoys learning. Knowing our students, making the environment condusive to their learning style, and having faith is all it takes. When the belief is there, all students will rise to the occasion, and so will we.

Objective: Students will be able to accurately and efficiently journal about their solution to a math situation.

Big Idea: Journaling and using the correct math terms is essential to the communication of knowledge and strategy. Today, students will attempt to model and write about their thinking in an organized manner.
