Reflection: Gradual Release The Depth of Decimals: Comparing Using A Fractional Model - Section 1: Warm Up: I want you to write about this...

I really like to get kids to write about their math as much as possible. I find though, that my students are intimidated and I have tried to help that with short writing lessons in math. I have decided that once a week, I will do a warm up that touches on a small written explanation of their thinking. This supports writing standards too! Then, as they get comfortable, I will present similar exercises for independent work, being sure that they have an opportunity to share. After that, I will be more confident that quiz and test short answer and essays will improve, strengthening them for the Smarter Balance Test.
