Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Review: Multi-Digit Subtraction - Section 2: Independent Practice

In this review lesson, the students used a place value chart to subtract mult-digit whole numbers.  The place value chart is a very important tool in math.  It helps to give the students conceptual understanding about the value of a number.  In this review lesson, the place value chart is important because it helps the students line their numbers up according to their value.   For example, in problem 2, the students subtracted the 2 ones from 9 ones to get 7 ones.  The place value chart also helps the students determine which order to subtract a number.  My students learned earlier in the year that we always begin subtracting from the right.  Therefore, in a whole number, the students know to begin subtracting in the ones place.
