Reflection: Classroom Setup What Should Our Response Have Been: WWII Seminar Prep (Day 1 of 2) - Section 2: Night Seminar Prep: Speed Dating

 

I really debated what I should do for today's class. As I mentioned in my narrative, I decided not to give them a quiz because I wanted to assess them on their overall comprehension of Night as it relates to the larger topics/ideas that my history partner has been covering in class.

I guess it is important for me to share my reflective thinking about why I am using this text at all. I didn't read Night for the sake of reading/analyzing a non-fiction text (though I definitely expected students to apply their abilities with those standards whilst reading/analyzing). I chose to teach this book purely so that my students could have the experience of reading it and discussing it alongside other texts, ideas, concepts about WWII and the Holocaust. 

With that in mind, I decided that the most important skill/task I needed students to focus on was being able to articulate their thoughts about the book as a whole. They are going to have a couple of opportunities to do this, and will be summatively assessed on their abilities with the final seminar later this week. Since we are building towards an assessment of their speaking, research and persuasion skills, the speed dating seminar that they participated in today served nicely as a formative/practice assessment. 

Students did well with the format. I think it was good to use a structure/strategy that I have never used before because it kept them engaged purely for its newness. I also think it helped to break up our Faulkner Squares and/or friend groupings because students were able to get a different perspective than they normally get about these ideas/concepts. Finally, my students are getting squirrely with the end of the school year approaching. By only giving them a few minutes to talk with each person, I was able to put a halt on most of the off-task behavior.

Unit 16: Informational Texts: Analyzing the Narrative Non-fiction Style of Night
Lesson 5 of 7

Objective: SWBAT draw evidence from informational text to support analysis and research by working with small groups to answer questions about Night.

Big Idea: To prepare for a historical and literary seminar about WWII topics, students will speed-date big ideas from Night.
