Reflection: Discourse and Questioning Basic Matrix Operations - Section 2: Explanation and Practice


When I gave my students Practice 1, my students were able to articulate something along the lines of there not being enough numbers in Matrix A to add to Matrix B.  As we discussed this problem, I found that it was helpful to point out to my students that I even if they forget to check whether or not two matrices are of suitable dimensions to sum them, that they should still recognize that the structure of the two matrices are not the same and catch their error.

Objective: SWBAT perform basic matrix operations such as addition, multiplication, and verification of inverses by hand and on a calculator.

Big Idea: Students are excited to start a new unit where they find they already have a ton of prior knowledge and the math feels intuitive.
