Reflection: Lesson Planning What's the Point? Inferring Themes - Section 3: Guided and Independent Practice

Most of the time, I scaffold my lesson with a "me", "us", now "you, by yourself" approach. However, the transfer of skills from talking about themes and finding evidence from a teacher selected book to an independently read book is really difficult. Some of the books students have will work and I might even be able to set up small groups with shared text that will allow students to effectively practice that skill. However, I chose to keep this lesson a beginning or review lesson. Later, when I have students do a book study or be a member of a book club, then I will expect them to talk about theme and now they will have a foundation to stand from.
