Reflection: Joy "The Ant and the Grasshopper" - Animals Personifying People - Section 2: Guiding the Learning

I chose this activity instead of a focused writing piece because in the previous lesson students had some difficulty with identifying examples of realistic vs figurative sections. The common core standards RL 5.2 and RL 5.6 both ask for students to identify authors use of words and point of view on the topic. I wanted students to gain this understanding through the use of figurative language vs. real events, the antagonist and protagonist relationships and the influence of these on the authors message to the readers. To ensure students could get these higher level thinking questions, I had them create a visual to support what they read. This fun factor really helped them read for details...which helped them build interest...which helped them have strong conversations...which gave them knowledge! Yeah for fun in school!
