Reflection: Lesson Planning Poetry is Music - Section 1: Mini-lesson

I had a substitute the day this lesson was taught.  In the morning, I asked him if he would be willing to reflect on the Poetry lesson.  He agreed and I interviewed him at the end of the day.  I was curious how the plans worked for him.  And I wondered if the videos were effective in getting kids engaged and supported the teaching point of the lesson. The  TP was "Readers can describe how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning to a poem.  See the video for his impressions.

He felt that the last segment of the Reading Rainbow show related to Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin got to be a little much for the students. Sounds like the beginning segments held the students attention and added depth to the meaning, while the last part did not.  This is good information to have.  as teachers we are continually monitoring and adjusting to keep engagement high and students learning from different kinds of learning opportunities.
