Reflection: Qualitative Evaluations Baseball as a Metaphorical Image in Fences, Act 1 Scene 1 - Section 3: Warmup + Share

When I chose the assignment for today's warmup, I wanted to see how students would respond if I provided appropriate scaffolding for the assignment (targeted vocabulary and line-by-line questioning) instead of saying, "What do you think the poem means? Explain in your own words."

Though my intentions were noble, my students responded with silence. For students who are somewhat talkative and sociable, this type of silence can be nerve-wracking for a teacher. I couldn't read the thoughts in the mind of your students, but I wish I could. They were not saying the task is difficult or why are you giving this to me. They were just silent.

When I asked what was wrong, some students responded by saying, "I thought we were reading the play" and "Why are we looking at poems again?"

A sigh of relief on my part, of course.
