Reflection: Real World Applications The Ellipse (Day 1 of 3) - Section 2: Definitions of an ellipse

 

This video shows how I had the students make a human ellipse.  As we are making the figure, I stop and discuss how the string length is a constant so the sum of the distance a person on the ellipse is to the people at the foci is always a constant.

This is the best way I have found for students to really understand the definition of an ellipse.  The students enjoy leaving the classroom for a quick "field trip" and I am able to share their end product with the students when am take a picture or a video of the activity.
