Reflection: Lesson Planning Writing an Opinion - Planning - Section 2: Independent Practice

The reason I chose this topic as a first opinion piece is to make it personal for students. I wanted them to have a firm grasp of supporting their opinion with reasons before moving them towards writing about a text and providing reasons from that text. This is a part of the philosophy of moving students from the known to the unknown, based on Lev Vygotsky’s theory of scaffolding. Start them from a place of familiarity and provide the support they need to move the next level.
