Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Claim, Proof, and Reason For Document Based Question Essays On Reconstruction - Section 2: Direct Instruction On Structuring Body Paragraphs

I am fortunate enough to work in a small school where I have time to collaborate with the rest of my team: social studies, science and math. The social studies teacher and I spent a good amount of time not just collaborating on teaching ideas but also on analyzing student writing as a way to address student need. After we looked at a few of the document based question essays they have written this year, we both came to conclusion that students needed help on learning how to structure body paragraphs to show clear analysis. We realized that it would be best to have the direct instruction in the language arts classroom as I would be able to support students through the writing process. We worked collaboratively to create this lesson to teach a specific skill that students needed to work on.
