Reflection: Essay Writing Evaluating and Editing Writing - Section 3: Independent Work

This is the first time that I see real progress in student writing. Students are actually making arguments and not just summarizing, which was a real problem at the beginning of the school year. They also edited their paper thoroughly, which results in papers that provide a real picture of their writing skills. Earlier in the school year, I was receiving papers full of careless mistakes that they could have easily fixed themselves. That makes it difficult to see what they truly need help with. I think the stamina required for this series of short writing assignments helped them work on certain writing skills. I also think that we are finally beginning on cashing in on earlier writing lessons. Students are still not writing as well as I hope they would. Most of their essays would still score a 3 on the rubric we have been working towards. However, there is definitely progress and I am excited about building from here. Here is a pretty successful paper.
