Reflection: Checks for Understanding Blast Off! Counting Backwards Within 10 - Section 4: Independent Practice and Informal Assessment

In my lesson reflections, you will often here me discuss the importance of building informal assessment into lessons.  I observed something during the informal assessment portion of this lesson that I might not have caught had the lesson ended with guided practice.  As I walked around, I noticed some of the students were not counting backwards on the activity sheet.  They were starting on the right side of the paper and counting on from one to complete the sheet.  This small piece of information told me that these students do not have a firm understanding of how to count backwards.  It will be important for me to build in some more opportunities for these students to practice this skill.
