Lesson Plan
Bell ringer:
Students will answer the following question in their reading journal and then share their responses with the class.
How would you describe your neighborhood?
"I do":
Teacher will read aloud Chapter 3 of Brothers in Arms.
Stop at the following points for class discussion:
*Pg. 35: "I had lived in the city long enough to know you didn't move through other people's blocks unless you knew where you were going and what you were doing." What does this tell us about the city in which Martin Luna lives? Why is this detail important?
*Pg. 39: "Bluford was a maze of hallways with freshmen running back and forth like cats in an alley." What does this tell us about Bluford High? Why is this detail important?
*Pg. 44: "Then the long-haired girl with the great smile raised her hand." Based on this quote, what makes a girl attractive to Martin Luna?
"We do":
In pairs, create an annotated illustration of Martin Luna's neighborhood. Use the first few pages of the chapter to find important quotes worth including.
Students will then share their illustrations with the class.
***Mini lesson: Review with students how to write a "compare - contrast" thesis statement.
"You do":
Using evidence from the chapter, write a well-developed paragraph comparing and contrasting your neighborhood with Martin Luna's neighborhood.
Exit slip: Write a thesis statement that compares and contrasts your high school with Martin Luna's high school.
