Lesson Steps
Preview book with the children.
Discuss the title.
Look at the picture (you will notice one unhappy face. Probe until it is noticed.)
Book Walk. Look at the pictures and ask the students to share what is happening on each page. What are the feelings that you notice? Make predictions.
Ask, “Where is the setting?” “Who can remember what setting means?”
Read the book.
Confirm Predictions made during the book walk.
Extension Activity
Students will role-play being the kid, bully, and teacher. Divide class into groups of 3. If there is an extra, there can be 2 bullies. Students can act out the story. What would happen if there were 2 bullies? How would that make it harder? What would happen if there were 2 “friends?” Students can act out in front of the class and classmates can guess who is playing which role.
