Lesson Plan
A PowerPoint introduces students to the use of commas to indicate direct address. Sentence examples are taken from Brothers in Arms. Students learn three different structures for direct address.
1. Students examine a group of short sentences from the text. Each sentence contains a direct address. They are asked to find what the sentences have in common.
2. Students contrast sentences containing direct address with sentences containing a name but no direct address.
3. The PowerPoint guides students through three patterns: beginning a sentence with a direct address, ending with a direct address, and inserting a direct address in the middle of a sentence.
4. Students consider how the use of direct address changes the tone and impact of a thank you letter.
5. Students create original sentences using direct address.
6. In pairs, students locate sentences containing direct address in Brother in Arms. They select one sentence to include on a wall chart.
