Direct Instruction

T: Good readers often have distinguish between fact and opinion. Writers will intertwine fact and opinion and you as the reader have to sort through and figure out which is which. As such it is important to know the difference between fact and opinion.

Have students turn and talk about the differences. Then as a class come up with a concrete definition for fact and opinion. Write the definition on an anchor chart.

Now tell students they will practice finding fact and opinion. Show students the graphic organizer. Read an article together. When you are finished reading. Go back and model aloud as you complete the graphic organizer.

Guided Practice

Allow students to discuss and add to the fact and opinion graphic organizer as you continue to model aloud.

Independent Practice

Give students their own article/text and copy of graphic organizer. Have them complete it using independent text.

Closing

Discuss why it is important to determine the difference between fact and opinion.
