Direct Instruction: (10 minutes)
Present students with the following problem. Have them work in partners to answer the question. Discuss their answers and the work that they did to get them.
Ex. Ms. Cobelli bought eight juice boxes for $2.00 at the grocery store. Mrs. Wells went to another grocery store and bought 15 juice boxes for $3.00. Who got a better deal on juice boxes? Justify your answer.
Have several groups discuss how they got their answer. Students will most likely find the cost of 1 juice box. In order to answer our question, we found the cost of one juice box. That is known as finding the unit rate. Why do you think it's called a unit rate?
Have students put the following definition in thier notes:
Have students put the following definition in thier notes:

To find the unit rate, simplify the ratio until it has a denominator of 1.
Ex. Asha earns $280 in 40 hours. What is her hourly rate of pay?
