Lesson: A Day in Pompeii
Divide students into 6 equally sized groups to complete the attached tasks. Students will rotate as groups to each station. Each should take 3-4 minutes.
Project the attached Powerpoint on a large screen or wall throughout the activity. At random intervals advance the slides to simulate two earthquakes. During the 6th station advance to the volcano slide and instruct students to freeze in whatever position they are in. (It may be helpful to explain the freeze process before the lab begins and to practice it a couple times. Do not tell students a volcano will be the trigger however.)
Discuss how the victims of the eruption of Vesuvius were "frozen" in time.
To close show a short clip from Pompeii: The Last Day to give students another visualization of the tragedy.
