Heating and Cooling Technology
Lesson 4 of 7
Objective: Students will be able to investigate the influence of heating and cooling technology on the individual, family, or community.
The lesson will begin with a whole group discussion. I will lead the discussion by asking the students to share some ways they heat and cool their homes. I will chart their responses on the board. I will model asking the students questions and seeking answers by asking probing questions such as, "Why does your family use these methods or tools to heat or cool your home? How does the tool or method that is being used, affect the properties of the objects that are being heated up or cooled down? Would you consider these tools or methods to be effective? Which tools or methods do your family use most often and what do you do if the tool is not available to you? Do all families heat and cool their homes in the same way?"
I will inform the students that they will be investigating their peers to determine how the process of heating or cooling influences families in their home.
Students will be given a copy of the How do Heating or Cooling Technologies Influence Families Recording Sheet. I will allow time for students to review the sample questions. Next, I will have students discuss which question they believe needs to be asked first. Students will be given the opportunity to share out responses.
Next, I will ask students to identify which questions lead to additional questions and identify what questions have to be asked to get the information that we are seeking.
Before beginning, I will instruct students to select the top questions that they would like to ask their partner and write them on the back of their worksheet. Once complete, students can begin interviewing a partner and recording their responses on their worksheet. As students work, I will walk around and assist the students by asking probing questions to encourage detailed responses.
To conclude the lesson, students will be given the opportunity to share their answers. I will encourage students to speak with their families to discover how the heating and cooling technologies of today influence their everyday life.
We will discuss how asking questions and seeking answers about heating and cooling items helped the students learn about how technology influences individuals, families, or communities.
