Objective: SWBAT identify ways to use their power to stop bullying.
Bullying is such a prevalent problem in today's schools. For this reason, I selected the Scholastic News article titled, "Don't Just Stand By" for my students to read and discuss. I begin by asking my students to tell me what bullying means. Some of them define bullying as name calling/checking, hitting another student, leaving another student out of activities, making another student do something he/she doesn't want to do, making fun of another student, or taking their belongings. I also tell my students that bullying is exercising power over another person in an unfair way. We, then, watch a Brainpop video about bullying.
Don't Just Stand By
During this section of the lesson, we read the Scholastic News article "Don't Just Stand By" by Natalie Smith. I again referenced the quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter." I explained to my students that they don't have to just be innocent bystanders. They can take a stand against bullies by speaking up against them. After reading the article, we discussed some reading comprehension questions (see attached Powerpoint presentation).
For this section of the lesson, it is my goal to empower my students to stop bullying! We begin by brainstorming ways to stop bullying: tell an adult, be friendly to new students, don't talk about students in a negative way, be a role model for other students, etc. Then, I allow them time to work with a partner to complete the Bullying Solutions graphic organizer.
