End of Grade Review: Equations and Inequalities
Lesson 5 of 11
Objective: Students will be able to write, simplify and solve equations and inequalities.
- Opener: As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener. Please see my instructional strategy clip for how openers work in my classroom: Instructional Strategy - Process for openers. This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is mathematical practice 3. - Learning Target: After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended target is, “I can solve real world and mathematical problems pertaining to equations and inequalities.” Students will jot the learning targets down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).
Guided Notes: To begin this lesson, I will recap equations and inequalities with some quick notes. Eventhough these have been intertwined throughout our curriculum, I just want to readdress the formal notes for the topic.
Hollywood Squares: As a way to bring test prep into the lesson, I am going to play a game of Hollywood Squares with the students. I will use the two group review format that I often use for review games. Each question will represent common types of problems that will be found on the state test. This game is a good way to bring in MP 7 and 8 - students need to make connections and apply what they know to different situations.
