### Lesson Plan

Teacher: Meyer, Siesfeld Subject: Algebra Grade: 8 Unit:    Expressions Week:  9/20-9/24 Day Monday, September 20, 2010 BPCPS Standard(s) 8AL.EX.02 Irrational Numbers Students will classify numbers as rational or irrational, simplify irrationals, and order them by plotting them on a number line. Objective(s) SWBAT plot irrational numbers on a number line, using whole number benchmarks. Do Now Three simplifying irrationals problems   <> Today we’re going to talk how to estimate the value of an irrational number after we have simplified it.  We will be building on the two rules we learned last week.  What were those rules? <> <>  integer addition Do Now Review Go over three problems quickly. Learning Activities (group, independent, guided reading) Class Notes -          Since any irrational number can be approximated as a decimal, any irrational number can be approximately placed on a number line. -          Ask students about pi and plotting this number. -          Three Steps for plotting irrationals: 1. Write the irrational number in its simplest form using the product rule and/or the quotient rule 2. Find the approximate value of the irrational number, using perfect squares to guide your approximation 3. Place the approximate value on the number line -           Complete simple example, then one with quotient rule, one application ordering question -          Encourage students to use their notes from Thurs and Friday to help them with quotient and product rule. -          To order irrationals, plot on the number line and use this to help you order them. Independent Practice: -          Students should use notes to help with product an quotient rule -          Once notes are complete, students should complete CW independently. -          They should work on the application problems after completing through question 5,then return to 6-8. -          Circulate to check off correct answers. Closing What are the three steps to plotting irrationals? What is the first step if you are asked to order irrationals? Assessment Grade HW Homework HW worksheet similar to CW Materials On server Accommodations Requests for Feedback Comments for Co Teaching (if app)
