SWBAT read and write decimals to the thousandths place, with and without money as a context.

Example 1

Write in written form and standard form when given a picture.  Model when to say the place value name when reading numbers.  Emphasize saying numbers the "collegiate" way. Model the difference between point nine and nine tenths. 

Look at the picture below. 

What fraction is shaded?

Using a decimal is another way to write a fraction.  Say the fraction. 

Now, since we say tenths we know that we are going to use the tenths place value. 

Start by writing 0 and your decimal.

How many tenths do we have?

So I write a 4 in the tenths place value.

Looking at the picture, what is the whole number?

Now, what do I write to show I am going from whole numbers to fractions?

What fraction is shaded on the left over?

Say the fraction and use that to help you.

What is the denominator of our fraction? 

That so should I use one or two place values on this side of the decimal?

How is question number two like writing a mixed number?

Example 2

Given word form, convert to standard form.  Use the word AND as a hint of where to put the decimal. 

What word shows us that we need to use a decimal?

Example 3

Given expanded form, write the decimal.

Line up the decimal points and add down.
