Lesson: Solving multi-step inequalities
Lesson Objective
Lesson Plan
Do Now: (5 minutes)
1) The record for rainfall in DC is 5 inches in one day. Write an inequality that represents the amount of rain that DC has received in a day.
2) Solve and graph:
x/6 < -7
3) Solve for x:
3x – 9 – 8x = 11
Problem Solving: (15 minutes)
Have students solve the following inequality and equation in their notes:
x/5 > 20 and x/5 = 20
What is the same about each of the solutions? What is different about the solutions?
Have students solve the following equation in their notes:
3x - 7 = 8
Have students solve the following inequality in their notes:
3x - 7 < 8
What was the same about how you solved the equation and inequality? What is different about the solutions?
Solve the following inequalities and compare work with a partner:
Ex. 6x - 7 > 2x + 17
Ex. 5x - 12 < 3x - 4
Ex. 7(r - 3) > 13
Guided Practice: (5 minutes)
Solve the following problems on white boards:
2x – 3 > 7
8n – 2 > 17n + 9
4 – 2n > 7 – 3n
