Circle Graph: a graph of data where the entire circle represents the whole.
20 minutes |
Explore (Conceptual Development) |
Tell students that the best way for them to understand circle graphs is by creating them. Split students into pairs, and give each pair a paper plate and a small bag of M&Ms. Draw an example of the finished product on the board as you take students through each step. 1) Group colors 2) Line around perimeter 3) Draw a dot in the center of the plate 4) Using a ruler, draw a straight line from the edge of a color section to the dot, so M&Ms of the same color are in a wedge together with all lines meeting in the middle. 5) Color each section to match the M&M color. 6) Remove M&Ms and view circle graph! |
Get into pairs. Follow steps 1-6 as demonstrated. Both members of the pair are expected to be actively participating in the activity. |
10 minutes
Explain (Guided Practice) |
Ask each pair to share their circle graph. Create a class data table that will allow each group to record how many of each color M&M they had. Once each pair has shared, use the data to calculate the mean for each color. |
Share circle graph with class. Record data in the data table and actively work to calculate the class mean for each color. |

Extend/ Elaborate
Pass out a worksheet that requires students to interpret circle graphs based on the data provided. Circulate the room and provide assistance, or pull aside a small group if necessary. |
Complete the graphing worksheet independently. |
