Lesson: Lesson 4: Setting & Mood

Aim: SWBAT draw conclusions about the relationship of setting to mood in texts.

Teaching point: Good readers notice the setting of the story and how it can impact the mood of a story and of a reader and support their thinking with text evidence.

Mini Lesson:

The setting can include the time and place, of course, but it can also include something called the “___________________________     ___________________________________________” or the common attitudes, beliefs, and practices of the community and/or characters in the story.

Now, in order to figure out how the setting relates to the mood of the story while I read, I’m going to do the following things (post or project these criteria):

1.     Pay attention to _________________________________ details (What are the time, place, “social environment”, and key objects in this story?).

2.     Pay attention to the ____________________________________ of the characters (How are the characters acting/reacting? What are they saying that could indicate their mood?)

3.     Pay attention to my mood (How do these details make me feel?)

4.     Formulate a statement that ________________________________setting to mood in the story.

Choose two words to describe the mood of “Eleven” and describe the connection between these words and the setting.  Next, choose two details directly from the text that support your answer.
