Lesson Objective

Students will compare solid and plane figures by their properties.

Lesson Plan

Engagement ( Warm- Up) 5 min.:
Display two figures: Sqaure Prism and Square

What is the difference between the two?

Allow students to share their answers and demonstrate if possible.

Exploration (Self- Guided): (Notes from Previous)
Solid figures have 3 dimensions: length, width, and height.
Face: the flat surface where the edges meet.
Edge: the line segment that connects two faces and two vertices
Vertex: the corner or point where edges meet.

Additional Notes:
Plane Figures have 2 dimensions: length and width or height.
Side: Line segment that connects vertices
Vertex: Corner

Explanation (Insrtuctional) 15 minutes:
Teacher will have students display the figures that they created from the activity so that students can see how each looks.

Teacher will give the students time to review the properties of each solid figure.

Comparison Activity:
Students will trace all the faces of  each solid figure on to a sheet of paper.
Student will then discuss how the shape of the faces or flat surfaces relates to the name of that solid.

For example:
-A square prism has all square faces.
-A square pyramid has a sqaure base and triangular faces on the sides.

Students will create a list of all the faces that each solid has and how many of each.

Students will be asked to make a generalization based on the activity.

Elaboration (Classwork/ Homeowrk) 10 min.:

Homework: Writing Assignment: What do plane figures and solids have in common? How are they related?

Evaluation (Closing) 5 min.:
Exit Ticket 2 min.:
How many triangular faces does a triangular pyramid have?
