Lesson Plan


Do Now

Tell students to record the "Favorite Cats" table in math journals.

Opening

  • Discuss what we can learn from the  "Favorite Cats" table.
  • State today's objectives.

Direct Instruction

Tell students that we can use a bar graph to show the results of this survey. 


Guided Practice



Guide students through planning and making bar graphs. 
Ask the following questions, in the given order:
1. What would the bars in the graph represent? 
2.  How would you represent the animals in the graph?
3. How would you represent the number of votes for each animal?
4.  How would the bars represent the total number of votes for each animal?
 

Independent Practice

Distribute Creating a Bar Graph Practice Sheet. 

Explain to students that they are to turn the results of the "Favorite Cats" survey into a bar graph. 

Check students work to be sure that they understand what the graph should look like and that each bar correctly shows the number of tally marks from the table. 

Closing

Select 2 or 3 students to share their graphs.
