### Lesson Objective

SWBAT evaluate expressions using substitution.

### Lesson Plan

 Element/Time Teacher Do Now (8:30 – 8:40)/(10:00 –10:10) ·         Teacher walks around to greet students and check in with students about their do now and homework HW Check ·         Teacher walks around to help/spot check student HW Mental Math (8:40 – 8:50) /(10:10 – 10:20) ·         Teacher reads and reveals a series of 6 problems – helping students to think of strategies to help students solve the problems ·         Teacher pulls sticks (cold call) to have students answer the questions Mini Lesson (8:50 – 9:25)/(10:20 – 10:55) Intro: ·         Yesterday we looked at expressions to combine like terms. ·         Today we are still going to look at expressions today but we are going to evaluate them. Since an expression doesn’t equal anything we can’t figure out what the variable is equal to.  Evaluating expressions means we can find a value for the expression if we are given a value for the variable. ·         In order to evaluate an expression we must be told what the variable is equal to.  Then we replace the variable with the value given to us.  Lastly, we solve the numerical/mathematical sentence. ·         Model for students with materials.  ·         Inform students that a coefficient next to a variable means to multiply.  ·         Emphasize replacing the variable with the number given inside of parentheses – remind students parentheses means to multiply Guided: ·         Walk through examples with the class.  Show with concrete models what each one means.  Stress the way to show your work – it’s important to show work in this way in order to make sure we don’t make mistakes  ·         Whiteboard use for check. ·         “Plug it in, plug it in” Independent: ·         Students will work independently to evaluate expressions.  Stress showing work appropriately as students are working. Closing: ·         What did we learn? ·         Why is important? ·         What are some common mistakes? What does successful work look like/sound like?
