### Lesson Objective

SWBAT compare and order integers

### Lesson Plan

Standard 6NSO.N3 Know that numbers and their opposites add to 0 and are on opposite sides at equal distance from 0 on a number line; know that 0 is an integer that is neither negative nor positive Aim/Objective: Key Points SWBAT compare and order integers ·           ·         The further right an integer is on the number line the greater it is. ·         The larger the absolute value of a negative integer, the smaller that integer is Assessment: Exit Ticket: 1.        Which list is in order from greatest to least? a.       -28, -25, -6, -1 b.       -4, -2, 1, 15 c.        8, -4, -32, -31 d.       14, -15, -87, -97 2.           3. Lesson Do Now: Materials: Intro/Direct Instruction: ·         Define integers as counting numbers and their opposites (1, 2, 3, 4….-1, -2, -3…) (non-integers: ·         Define opposites through example:  4 and -4 are opposites.  The reason they are opposites is because when we look at a number line, 4 and -4 are both the same distance from zero.  ·         Each number on a number line is named based on how far away from zero it is – numbers to the right of zero are positive numbers, numbers to the left of zero are negative numbers ·         On the number line numbers get bigger as you move to the right – show that it doesn’t matter where in the number line you are located – that this always holds true. ·         Students take notes on key points in notes packets. Guided Practice ·         Display a number line.  Ask students to place 6 and its opposite on the number line ·         Ask students to place markers on number line at 5, -2, 0 and -5 ·         Ask students to list those numbers in order from least to greatest Independent Practice: ·         Students complete worksheet on integers and comparing/ordering integers. Closing ·         Review Key Points (through questioning with students) How can I use a number line to compare numbers? ·         Students complete exit ticket · Accommodations Reminder of symbols used for comparison. Number line to work with – labeled from -20 to 20 on desk.
