Registering for an account

  • What is BetterLesson?
    A: BetterLesson is a curriculum-sharing and professional-networking site for teachers.
  • Signing up
    A: Please sign up! It's free!
  • Getting started guide
    A: Please see 'Getting Started' to receive a quick tour of the core uses of BetterLesson.
  • Which email to use?
    A: You can sign up with any personal or work email.  It is preferable to use your school email, if you have one.
  • What is a region?
    A: We divided US states into regions in order to provide geographically-dense networks. You must choose a region when you register — you will be automatically joined to a regional network so that you can collaborate with teachers nearby.
  • I am not from the US.
    A: If you are not from the US, please email support@betterlesson.com and we will customize a user profile for you.
  • I am from a US territory
    A: If you are from a US territory, please email support@betterlesson.com and we will customize a user profile for you
  • I have more than one role at a school.
    A: If you have more than one role at a school, choose your primary role.
  • I am an ex-schoolteacher.
    A: That's OK!  We still want you.  Sign up with the school at which you used to teach, if you'd like.  Choose your ex-teaching role.  Teachers that are currently at that school will appreciate you joining their ranks!
  • I have taught at multiple schools.
    A:  You can currently choose to affiliate with only one school, so you must decide which school.
  • I have taught multiple grade levels and/or multiple subjects.
    A: You can choose as many grade-level/subject combinations as you'd like.

Signing in/out

  • Signing in
    A: To sign in, please go to http://betterlesson.com/users/login
  • Forgot your password
    A: If you forgot your password, please go to the login page and click on 'Forgot you password?'.  You will be prompted for the email with which you registered for BetterLesson.  Once you submit this form, you will receive an email with a link to reset your password.
  • Change your email
    A: To change the email address you use on BetterLesson, go to the edit profile page and click on the link below your email.  Then just enter your new email and hit send, we will change your email promplty and notify you when your account is updated.
  • Signing out
    A: To sign out, click on the 'Sign out' text at the top right of any page of BetterLesson.
  • Sharing
    A:  You can set your sharing permissions on any unit, lesson, or file to 'Public', 'All of BetterLesson,' 'My Colleagues,' or 'Private.'  By default, all units, lessons, and files are set to share with 'Public.'  Changing the sharing permission of single files within a lesson (or lessons within a unit) is possible.

Your Home Page

  • Filtering the Newsfeed
    A: When you sign in to BetterLesson, you are greeted by the newsfeed.  You can filter the newsfeed, by clicking on the different tabs at the top, by 'All of BetterLesson,' 'My Activity,' 'My Colleagues', and 'My Networks.'
  • Change the list of 'Recommended Colleagues'
    A: List of 'recommended colleagues' getting stale?  Hit refresh in your browser for a new group of 'recommended colleagues.'
  • I want to view more of a specific newsfeed item.
    A: To view more of a specific newsfeed item, click on 'View All' at the bottom of the specific news item.  E.g. When you see that a user has uploaded 35 files, but you can only see 5 of them, click on 'View All' to see all 35 file names.
  • I want to view more of the newsfeed.
    A:  To view more of the newsfeed, click on 'More' at the bottom of the newsfeed.

Courses

  • Create a Course
    A: To create a course, follow these steps: 
    1. Click on “My Curriculum” tab.
    2. Click on “Add Course” button at top of page.
  • Edit a Course
    A: To edit a course, click on the 'Edit Course' button below the course name in the 'My Curriculum' page.
  • Can a Course have more than one subject?
    A: Yes, a course can have more than one subject.
  • Sharing a Course
    A: You cannot set sharing permissions at the course level.  You can set sharing permissions on the unit, lesson, and file level.
  • Order of Courses
    A: Courses are ordered in the order in which you create them.  You can arrange the courses by alphabetical order by clicking on 'Course' at the 'My Curriculum' page [link].
  • Delete a Course
    A: To delete a course, click on the 'Edit Course' button below the course name in the 'My Curriculum' page.  At the bottom of the light box that appears, click on 'Delete Course.'  No undo!

Units

  • Create a Unit
    A: To create a unit, follow these steps:
    1. Click on “My Curriculum” page.
    2. Click on “Create Unit” button at bottom of page.
  • Edit a Unit
    A: To edit a unit, follow these steps:
    1. Click on “View/Edit” next to a Unit name.
    2. Click on “Edit this Unit” at right-bottom of the page.
  • Can a unit have more than one subject?
    A: No, you can only assign one subject to a unit.  If the unit is multidisciplinary (e.g. Science-Fiction writing unit), choose a subject that best fits the context (i.e. is this a science or a writing class).  In the future, we will have a 'multidisciplinary' tag.
  • Sharing a Unit
    A: You can set sharing permissions at the unit level.
  • Order of Units within a Course
    A: Units are ordered in the order in which you create them.  You can arrange the units by alphabetical order by clicking on 'Unit' on the 'My Curriculum' page [link].
  • Delete a Unit
    A: To delete a unit, click on the 'Edit Unit' button at the top of the Unit Page.  At the bottom of the light box that appears, click on 'Delete Unit.'  No undo!

Lessons

  • Create a Lesson
    A: To create a lesson, follow these steps:
    1. You must be in an existing Unit in order to create a Lesson.
    2. In the “My Curriculum” tab, click on  “View X Units.”
    3. Click on a specific Unit.
    4. Click on the “Create a Lesson” button on the bottom of the page.
  • Edit a Lesson
    A: To edit a lesson, follow these steps:
    1. You must be in an existing Unit in order to edit a Lesson.
    2. In the “My Curriculum” tab, click on  “View X Units.”
    3. Click on a specific Unit.
    4. Click on a specific Lesson.
    5. Click on “Edit Lesson” at the top.
  • Add links to a Lesson
    A: To add links to a lesson, follow these steps: 1. Within a lesson page, click on "Add Materials." 2. In the light box that drops down, copy and paste the website url under “Website Link” and write in the name of the website under "Website Link Title."
  • Add materials to a Lesson
    A: To add materials to a lesson, follow these steps:
    • Within a lesson page, click on “Add Materials.”
    • In the light box that drops down, type in the materials you'd like to add to the lesson.
  • Embed video into a Lesson
    A: To embed video to a lesson, follow these steps:
    1. Within a lesson page, click on “Edit Lesson.”
    2. Scroll down to the 'Lesson Plan.'
    3. Within the 'Lesson Plan' text box, click once where you would like to insert the video.
    4. Click on 'Source,' which can be found at the top of the text box.
    5. Paste the embed code (which can be found on the video page at YouTube, Vimeo, or any other video-hosting website from which you are embedding the video).
    6. Click on 'Source' one more time.
    7. Click on Submit at the bottom of the page.  When the page refreshes, you will see the embedded video within your Lesson Plan!
  • Change the order of Lessons
    A: To change the order of lessons, you can drag and drop lessons within a Unit Page.  Follow these steps:
    1. Go to the Unit Page of the lessons.
    2. Hover your pointer on the lesson you'd like to move.  Move your pointer all the way to the left of the lesson name until your pointer turns into a 'grabbing hand.'
    3. Click and hold down the mouse.
    4. Drag the lesson up or down to its desired location among your other lessons.
    5. Let go of the mouse (drop).
  • Tag a Lesson by a state standard
    A: To tag a lesson by a state standard, click on 'Browse Standards' when creating or editing a lesson.  The state with which you registered your account will appear, and you can navigate through the standards.  Follow the route all the way to the state standard, click, and the state standard will be copied into the "State Standards" box.  If clicking on the state standard does not copy automatically into the "State Standards" box, you can manually highlight, copy, and paste the strand into the "State Standards" box.
  • Tag a Lesson by multiple state standards
    A: To tag a lesson by more than one state standard, you can navigate through the State Standard browser and highlight, copy, paste any additional state standards into the "State Standards" box.
  • Delete a Lesson
    A: To delete a unit, click on the 'Delete Lesson' button at the top of the Lesson Page.  No undo!  Or, within a Unit Page, click on the trashcan icon next to the lesson name.

Files

  • Upload files
    A: In order to upload files, you must have at the very least one unit.  Click on the 'Upload Files' button at the top of the 'My Curriculum' page, a Unit Page, or a lesson page.
  • Types of files I can upload
    A: Currently we support the most common file formats - Microsoft Office documents and images. Our multimedia support for movies and sound is nearly completed. Our goal, however, is to support the upload of all file formats (Smart Board files etc.), although a preview/online reading may not be available for some time. 
  • Upload multiple files at one
    A: You can upload up to 40 files at a time.  Once you've clicked on an "Upload Files" button, click on 'Add Files' button in the lower left of the light box to browse your hard drive(s) for files.
  • Tag files post-upload
    A: Once a batch of files has uploaded, you will see a screen with a preview of each file.  Before submitting the files for use on the site, you will be prompted to tag the files by Subject and Instructional Type.  Once you tag the first file in the batch by a certain Subject Category, all subsequent files will inherit that Subject Category tag.  You can then go through and change any files that might necessitate a different tagging.
  • Preview a file
    A: To preview a file post-uploade, click on the preview button in the top left of the thumbnail of the file.  To close this preview, click on 'close' in the upper left of the preview.
  • Assign a file to a lesson
    A: There are 2 ways to assign a file to a lesson.  1) You can do it directly by uploading the file to the Lesson Page.  2) You can do it indirectly by uploading the file to the Unit Page and then assigning the file to a lesson through drag-and-drop from the 'Unassigned Files' on the right to a lesson of your choice.
  • Assign a file to multiple lessons
    A: You can assign one file to multiple lessons.  Once a file is assigned to an initial lesson, it will show up in 'Assigned Files' on the right of a Unit Page.  From within 'Assigned Files,' drag the file to a second (and third, and fourth...) lesson.  The file will remain in 'Assigned Files' on the right, but will now be found in multiple lessons.
  • Edit a file
    A: To edit a file, click on 'Edit' next to 'File Details' at the top right of a File Page.
  • Attributing a file to another author
    A: To attribute an author to a file, click on 'Edit' next to 'File Details' at the top right of a File Page, or click on 'add an Author' to the right of the page, within details.
  • Deleting a file
    A: To delete a file, click on 'Delete' next to 'File Details' at the top right of a File Page.
  • Removing a file from a lesson (but not from the site)
    A: You can remove a file from a lesson (but not from the site) from a Lesson Page or a Unit Page.  From a Lesson Page, click on the 'x' next to the file in the upper left.  This will not delete the file, but rather only remove the file from the lesson.  From a Unit Page, expand a lesson and click on the large green arrow next to a file to remove the file from the lesson.
  • File upload size limit
    A: The file upload size limit is 12mb. That's cover some of the most verbose, colorful PowerPoints you've got.  If there's an issue with file sizes, please email us at support@betterlesson.com.
  • Upload timing
    A: With a good internet connection, files upload at an average rate of 5 seconds / 1 file.
  • Tagging Files
    A: You can tag files by subject (to 4 levels of specificity) and instructional type.  By tagging files accurately and to multiple levels, searching for a file under on the 'Resources' Page will be very exact.
  • Sharing files
    A: You can share a file with a colleague by clicking on the 'Share a file' button in the lower portion of 'File Details' on a File Page.  Your colleague will receive an email with the file url.
  • Searching for files within your own curriculum
    A: You can easily locate a file within your own curriculum by utilizing the 'Search' box in the upper left of the 'My Curriculum' Page.  You will be taken to the 'Resources' Page, which is filtered to 'My Curriculum.'

Searching for files

  • Search with the Search box
    A: To search by keyword(s), follow these steps:
    1. Type a keyword(s) into the box in the top right of any page.
    2. View results (if desired, filter source with tabs).
    3. Refine your results by going to the box on the right called “Refine Your Results By:”
  • Search from the Resource Page
    A: To search from the Resource Page, follow these steps:
    1. Click on the “Resources” tab at the top of any page.
    2. Click on a specific Subject depending on grade level.
    3. View results (if desired, filter source with tabs).
    4. Refine your results by going to the box on the right called “Refine Your Results By:”
  • Search within My Curriculum
    A: You can easily locate a file within your own curriculum by utilizing the 'Search' box in the upper left of the 'My Curriculum' Page.  You will be taken to the 'Resources' Page, which is filtered to 'My Curriculum.'
  • Refining/Filtering search
    A:  After searching by keyword or from the Resources page, you can refine your search by grade level, subject, file type, instructional type.  To refine by any of these categories, go the right of the 'Resources' page after an initial search.
  • Searching for files of a particular user
    A:  To find files of a particular user, go to the profile page of a particular user.  The user's curriculum can be found at the bottom of their profile page.
  • Searching for files within a Network's Curriculum
    A: Network curriculum will show up in search results from the Resources page. To find files from your networks' curricula, you can filter your search results with the 'My Networks' tab.

  • Finding Colleagues
    A: To find colleagues, click on 'Colleagues' in upper right.  Browse under the 'Find Colleagues' tab.  You can search by name.  You can also filter your search by 'All of BetterLesson,' 'My Colleagues,' 'My State,' 'My Region,' 'My Subject,' 'My Role,' or 'My Grade.' 
  • Colleagues I know exist
    A: To find colleagues you know are on BetterLesson, click on 'Colleagues' in upper right.  Search under the 'Find Colleagues' tab.  You can filter your search by 'All of BetterLesson,' 'My Colleagues,' 'My State,' 'My Region,' 'My Subject,' 'My Role,' or 'My Grade.' 
  • Colleagues I don't yet know exist
    A: To find new colleagues, click on 'Colleagues' in upper right.  Search under the 'Find Colleagues' tab.  Type in the name of the user.

Networks page

  • My Networks
    A: When you click on 'Networks' in the upper right of any page on the site, you will be brought to a page that lists all of the networks of which you are a member.
  • Find Networks
    A: To find networks, click on the 'Find Networks' tab on the 'Networks' page.  Browse under the 'Find Networks' tab.  You can search by name (e.g. Middle School Science).  You can also filter your search by 'All Networks,' 'My Networks,' 'Networks in my State,' or 'Networks in my Region.'
  • To which networks am I joined automatically?
    A: When you register for BetterLesson, you are automatically joined to your school network, region network, and CMO/EMO/District network.
  • Joining Networks
    A: To join a network, click on the 'Join Network' button on the home page of any network.  Depending on the nature of the network, the administrator of the network will accept or ignore your request to join.
  • Creating Networks
    A: To create a network, click on the 'Create a Network' button on the top right of the 'Networks' Page.

Creating Networks

  • Types of Networks
    A: There are several different types of networks: Schools, Regions, CMO/EMO/Districts, Curriculum Organizations, and many different educator-generated groups.

Network Home page

  • Newsfeed
    A: The 'Activity' tab of a Network Page shows you activity of all users that are members of the network.  The newsfeed is not limited to network-exclusive activity.
  • About
    A: The 'About' tab of a Network Page provides salient information about the network.  It is also where network administrators create Network curriculum.  Think of it as the 'My Curriculum' for networks.
  • Discussion
    A: The 'Discussion' tab of a Network Page is a place for educators to post comments or begin discussions with other educators in the network.
  • Admin
    A: The 'Admin' tab of a Network Page is only seen by network administrators.  As a network administrator, you can edit network information, re-assign primary administrator status, and monitor who joins the network.
  • Stats
    A: The 'Stats' tab of a Network Page displays view and download stats for popular files, lesson, and units.

Network Admins

  • Who is the network admin?
    A: For school networks, typically a school leader or instructional coach is the network admin.  For CMO/EMO/District networks, typically an organizational leader is the network admin.   For an educator-generated network, the creator of the network is the network admin.
  • How many network admins can there be?
    A: There is no limit to the number of network admins. 
  • How does one become a network admin?
    A:  Network founders automatically become group admins.  Current network admins can assign any other group member to be a co-admin.
  • Sharing Settings
    A: Network admins control the sharing settings of Network curriculum.  Sharing settings can be uniquely set for units, lessons, and files by going to 'Edit Unit,' 'Edit Lesson,' and/or 'Edit File,' respectively.
  • Creating Curriculum
    A: Network admins can create curriculum on a network 'About' page in the same manner that an individual user creates curriculum under 'My Curriculum.'
  • Accepting/Ignoring Users
    A: Network admins can decide whom to accept and whom to ignore.  If you have been unfairly ignored from joining a network, please email support@betterlesson.com.

Network Courses

Network Files

  • Upload files

    A: You can easily locate a file within your own curriculum by utilizing the 'Search' box in the upper left of the 'My Curriculum' Page.  You will be taken to the 'Resources' Page, which is filtered to 'My Curriculum.'
