Unit 1: Survival Short Stories
This is a short, 3-4 week introductory unit designed to pick up where 6th grade Summer Academy (an orientation program for our new students in July) left off and to teach classroom procedures.

Unit 2: Hatchet
Our first novel of the year. Students will practice reading aloud (about 20-30 minutes daily) and following read-aloud guidelines. Emphasis on sequencing the events of the story and tracking the elements of plot.

Unit 3: Shackleton
Short unit of non-fiction. Emphasis on learning non-fiction text features, comparing and contrasting with Hatchet, sequencing events.

Unit 4: Red Scarf Girl
30 day unit on Red Scarf Girl (non fiction novel). Primary objectives were characterization, sequencing, cause and effect relationships, and multiple-choice test-taking strategies.

Unit 5: Poetry
Approx. 5 week unit. Introducing rhyme scheme, figurative language, mood and tone, poetry forms. Some poetry writing.

Trimester Exams
These are exams given at the end of each trimester of the 6th grade year. Exams are skills based and cumulative across the trimester.
