Course: 6th Grade Reading

Curriculum

1. 15 lessons Unit 1: Survival Short Stories

   This is a short, 3-4 week introductory unit designed to pick up where 6th grade Summer Academy (an orientation program for our new students in July) left off and to teach classroom procedures.

     Students will identify the rules and procedures of 6th Grade Reading.

      
   • Day 2: 9/1/10

     Students will identify common prefixes and root words, define and use the word "preview" correctly, and define sequential order.

      
   • Day 3: 9/2/10

     Students will define the word "precede" and use it correctly in a sentence.
     Students will sequence the events of their summers in a sequencing brain frame.

      
   • Day 4: 9/3/10

     Students will define the word "predetermine" and use it correctly in a sentence.
     Students will sequence the main events of a story they read in a sequencing brain frame.

      
   • Day 5: 9/7/10

     SWBAT...define and use the word "unbelievable," identify types of reading connections, make text to self connections as they read.

      
   • Day 6: 9/8/10

     SWBAT... make connections between a text and themselves and other texts.

      
   • Day 7: 9/9/10

     SWBAT... to make connections between a text and themselves, other texts, and the world.

     SWBAT...visualize a scene using the five senses.

      
   • Day 9: 9/14/10

     SWBAT...make inferences about a character using evidence from the text.

      
   • Day 10: 9/15/10

     SWBAT... make inferences about a character using evidence from a text.

      
   • Day 11: 9/16/10

     SWBAT...identify evidence to support character inferences.

2. 7 lessons Unit 2: Hatchet

   Our first novel of the year. Students will practice reading aloud (about 20-30 minutes daily) and following read-aloud guidelines. Emphasis on sequencing the events of the story and tracking the elements of plot.

     Annotate an MCAS passage and answer comprehension questions

     Make and analyze connections as they read.
     Summarize the plot of Hatchet using the plot pyramid.
     Create and utilize a unit test study guide.

3. 2 lessons Unit 3: Shackleton

   Short unit of non-fiction. Emphasis on learning non-fiction text features, comparing and contrasting with Hatchet, sequencing events.

     - Identify main events within a passage
     - Identify events within their sequencing BFs as "Rising Action"
     - Use multiple-choice strategies to answer questions about conflict
     - Correctly annotate a text with ARS

      
4. 3 lessons Unit 4: Red Scarf Girl

   30 day unit on Red Scarf Girl (non fiction novel). Primary objectives were characterization, sequencing, cause and effect relationships, and multiple-choice test-taking strategies.

5. 3 lessons Unit 5: Poetry

   Approx. 5 week unit. Introducing rhyme scheme, figurative language, mood and tone, poetry forms. Some poetry writing.
