On an Anchor chart create a two column sheet. Label one side What the text is about. Label the other side: My thinking. Also prepare a  similar chart on for each individual student.

Read the story the Librarian of Basra by Jeanette Winter.  After you  finish reading. Have students record what they are thinking.

Guided Practice

After you finish reading. Have students record what they are thinking under the appropriate column. As students write you write your own thinking on the anchor chart.  Have them turn and talk and share their thinking with their partner.

Then have them explain what the piece is about. Remind students that a summary is a short clip about the story and includes the most important details. Remind students that they are going to discuss not what they are thinking or feel about the text but what the text is about. Model for students. Have students turn and talk about what is important and record their ideas under the column about the text.  Go through the list and remove anything that is not an important detail and combine ideas that make sense to combine.

Compare and contrast the columns.

Write a summary based on class discussion that is no more than five sentences long.

Independent Practice

Students will create the two columns in their reading journal and use it to summarize their independent reading text. Student will write a summary in 5 sentences or less.

Closing

Remind students that even though their thinking is the most important, sometimes it is important to summarize a story they way we did.
