Lesson Objective

Students will create a flow map describing, “What is an atom?” for a younger student.

This is inquiry based lesson indented to cover 2 days (1 hour lesson each) of science sessions.  The lesson is written in ABC, CBV, R format (Activity Before Concept, Concept Before Vocabulary, and Reading).

Experiment/Investigation Notes

             The most challenging part of this investigation is working with microscopes.  If it is possible on a day before investigation to conduct a microscope mini-lesson I would suggest it.  Otherwise, a great deal of the investigation day is spent learning how to manipulate the microscopes.

 

Reading Day

              Students may need an extra day to complete Flow Maps, depending on how detailed their drawings become and whether or not they add color.  The option of showing Brain Pops "Atoms" is useful because it adds onto the information students have learned about atoms to include the concept of the amount of space there is in between an atom's nucleus and outer electrons.  You can sign up for a free trial in order to show video for free.

All of the resources worked. The students love the "Atoms Family" song. It will help them remember. The power points were good.
