DO NOW [5 min.]: Terrance is doing an experiment on bean plants. He sets four different cups, each with four seeds, on the windowsill in his house. He gives each bean plant the same amount of soil. He measures their height every Thursday. Using the picture as your guide, answer the following questions:

a)    What is Terrance’s independent variable?

Call on ten students at random to give the answers for the independent and dependent variables they identified on their hw.

Mini-lesson [5 min.]

As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable will either increase or decrease. You always write the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis. Do not forget the units. Draw the two different graphs that could result.

Guided Practice [7 min.]

Remember: Independent Variable is what the scientist changes and the Dependent Variable is what the scientist measures to see if there’s been an effect.

Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made.
