Explain (Guided Practice) 
A function is a relationship that assigns exactly one output value for each input value. The variables x and y are often used to represent input and output. Output = Input Present the following table to students:
Lead a discussion with students on how to determine the pattern for the input (x) and output (y).

Explore (Conceptual Development) 
On index cards have a function table and a matching pattern for x and y. Distribute index cards to students. 
Find their match, but before doing so they must determine the pattern (if they have the table) and if they have the pattern construct the table.

Assign students practice problems to complete (problems 1 21 odd)
