Lesson Plan

KEY POINTS.

What knowledge and essential skills are embedded in the objective? ð

·       William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States

·       William McKinley was very aggressive when it came to the way he approached the world.

·       William McKinley is known for being the President during the Spanish-American War, annexing Hawaii, the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

·       This was the first time that America extended its territory beyond the boarders of the continental United States.

·       The United States was able to expand its influence around the world because they were very powerful economically.

·       Essential Question: “Why would the price of cattle increase when demand for cattle increases?”

·       “How the invention of the telephone and the light bulb change the way that people live their lives?”

·        “Why would a country want to expand the land it has and take over new territories?”

·       Vocabulary: William McKinley, Phillpines, Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii, War, Colonize, Territory, Spanish American War, Rough Riders

1. OPENING ( 5 min.) (Engage)

Teacher:

·       At the start of the lesson, T will put the following starter on the board: “Why would a country want to take over other parts of the world?”

·       T will have the Ss write their starters down.

·       T will ask the Ss to share out their starters.

·       T will explain the objective for the day: By the end of the lesson, SWBAT explain how American expanded its role in the world during the Presidency of William McKinley.

Students:

·       Ss will write down their starter.

·       Ss will share their ideas with the class.

·       Ss will ask any last minute questions.

2. INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL (20 min.)

Teacher:

·       T will begin the lesson on McKinley by showing a Power Point on American colonialism spurred by President William McKinley.

·       T will emphasize that McKinley was able to spread to new areas around the world because at the turn of the century, America was very strong economically.

·       T will emphasize that the annexation of Hawaii, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam showed how powerful the United States was, and also emphasized how America was the powerhouse of the hemisphere and of the Far East.

·       T will also mention how the international community’s outlook of the U.S. changed after the Spanish American War.

·       T will go back to the idea that countries want to expand to new areas to get resources (oil, gold, etc.) or to expand their influence over different regions.

·       T will have the Ss fill out a graphic organizer on the PowerPoint.

·       T will stop during the Power Point to make sure that the students are understanding the Power Point.

Students:

·       Ss will ask questions as they arise.

·       Ss will answer questions that the T uses as checks for understandings.

3. GUIDED PRACTICE (20 min.)

Teacher:

·       T will put up the following writing prompt: “Why would a country want to expand its power to other countries?”

·       T will pull aside the higher-level students and encourage them to think beyond simply wanting to control more land.

·       T will tell the Ss to answer the question in complete sentences.

·       T will tell the Ss that it is important to try your best on this prompt because it will help the T understand what was explained well and what needs more time.

·       When the Ss are done, T will have the Ss share out their essays so that the class can discuss them.

Students:

·        Ss will complete the writing prompt.

·       If they want, Ss will share out their writings.

4. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE ( 35 min.)

Teacher:

·       T will then introduce the class activity for the day: “American Bragging Brochures”

·       T will ask the Ss if they know what bragging means.

·       T will explain to the Ss that they are going to be creating brochures from the perspective of a proud American after the Spanish American War.

·       T will tell the Ss that on the brochure they need to illustrate and tell people just how powerful America has become.

·       T will tell the Ss not to be general, but be specific – ie: we defeated a super power, Spain in the Spanish-American War.

·       T will tell the Ss that they could both illustrate and write on the brochure.

·       T will remind the Ss that brochure should be creative and it must use things that we learned in class.

·       T will monitor the room while the Ss complete their brochures.

Students:

·        Ss will complete their brochures.

5. CLOSING (10 min.)

Teacher:

·       As a closing, T will ask the Ss to review their brochures.

·       T will ask the Ss to share out part of their brochures.

·       T will review the main points of the Power Point.

·       T will tell the Ss that next lesson they will be learning about another president, President Roosevelt, and how he influenced the world.

Student:

·       Students will share.

·       Students will ask any last minute questions.

Teacher’s Reflection:

I chose to focus the lesson not so much on the details of the Spanish-American War, but how that particular incident catalyzed America’s presence on the world stage. Therefore,  a lot of the key points of the lesson are centered on this particular point.

In terms of the brochures, I found the students really like to brag about their own country. However, I had to really make sure they were using facts from the lesson such as, “we defeated Spain, we have new ‘colonies,’ we have the White Fleet, etc.”
