Lesson Objective

Students will be able to recognize plot elements in short stories and analyze characters- their traits, motivations, conflicts, points of view, relationships, and changes.

Lesson Plan

Do Now:

Students will complete a short readind comprehension do now from the packet


Introduction:
Today we will analyze "Raymond's Run" by looking at the conflict of this short story.  First we will take reveiw a PowerPoint which will define and identfy the different types of conflict.  Then we will discuss the conflict directly in the short story. And finally we will think about why conflict is necessary to have a great text.

Direct Instruction:
Teacher will show PowerPoint on Conflict.  This powerpoint is interactive and allows students to answer questions and think about the types of conflict in fiction.

Guided Practice
:

Students will complete the story elements sheet.
Teacher will lead a class discussion on how plot, characters and theme help to better understand the conflict in the story.

Independent Practice:
Place students in groups of 3 or 4 and assign each group 2 or 3 different discussion questions.  Each groups will answer questions in its entrity and be prepared to share out.


Closing:
Why is conflict a necessary part of a short story or novel?
