Mini Lesson (8:50 – 9:25)/(10:20 – 10:55) 
· T will explain that we are going to look at complex polygons. · T will define regular and irregular polygons · T will explain that complex polygons are often just one or more regular or irregular polygons put together · T will discuss that specifically we be looking at shapes that are two polygons put together –so that we should be looking for those shapes · T will demonstrate finding the area of any irregular polygon by subdividing the shape into different parts · T will explain that there are often several ways to subdivide a complex polygon o Thus, after we subdivide the shape we should look at the given dimensions to see if this is the best route for figuring out the area of the shape. o One way we will know if this is the best way to subdivide is that once we divide it into its different parts we have all the dimensions we need to find the area of each part o Sometimes you will subdivide the shape and realize that there is still a lot of missing information o IF this happens look to see if there is another way to subdivide the shape. · S will practice subdividing complex polygons into different more familiar polygons · T will then model finding the area – paying special attention to misconceptions o Mislabeling units (Think aloud – making a mistake and explaining why it is a mistake – and then going down the correct route) · S will work in pairs to divide shapes into different polygons and note the dimensions of each · S will find the area of those two portions and add the results together
