· T will define area as the number of squares that fit within a shape – and thus all answers should be in sq. units o Explain by relating to exponents – in this case we are multiplying two different dimensions together. So it would be dimensions squared and this is why it’s called a two dimensional shape. · T/S will find area by placing squares into a rectangle and seeing how area is just the number of squares inside the shape and relating it to the formula. · T will demonstrate finding the area of a rectangle (noting that the formula is length x width) · S will find the area of a rectangle using formula · T will say that a rectangle is one type of parallelogram but also demonstrate that some parallelograms look like (a rhombus) · T will demonstrate finding the area of a parallelogram by o Clearly identifying the base o Clearly identifying the height § Explain the height of the shape is going to be straight up and down – just like when you measure yourself, you don’t lean over and then measure you want to stand as straight as possible o Display several different parallelograms to students in which the base, height and an additional leg’s measures are given. Have students identify the base and the height in each example. · T will model finding the area of a parallelogram using the formula. · T will demonstrate that the formula for a parallelogram and rectangle are the same by showing how a parallelogram and rectangle are similar (cut of the triangle on the end and move it to the other side to make it look like a rectangle and relate the height here). · S will find the area of a parallelogram using the formula · S will work on openended/mc questions to find the area of a given parallelogram ·
