6NSO.N3  Know that numbers and their opposites add to 0 and are on opposite sides at equal distance from 0 on a number line; know that 0 is an integer that is neither negative nor positive

6NSO.C9 Know integer subtraction is the inverse of integer addition; use the number line to model addition and subtraction of integers and add and subtract integers

·         When adding integers on a number line:

o    Start at the first addend by moving from zero to that number

o    If adding a positive number move RIGHT that many spaces

o    If moving a negative number move LEFT that many spaces

Intro/Direct Instruction:

Teaching Points:  / Students take notes

·         We can use a number line to add integers

·         Always start at zero.  Then move to first addend

·         If the second addend is positive move RIGHT that many spaces

·         If the second addend is negative move LEFT that many spaces

·         The space you land on is your sum

·         Demonstrate with – 5 +  8

·         Model how to draw this on a number line.  (start end of arrow at zero, move to negative 5 with arrow. Draw new arrow on top of negative 5 and move 8 spaces to the right)

·         Model: -2 + 5; -9 + -3; 5 + -7

Guided Practice

o   Give students number lines and a hershey kiss.  Have them demonstarte the following problems (-5 + 5; -8 +2;  4 + -8 ) 
Students try and draw on number line models for (-4 + 4)  (-8 + -2)   (1 + -8)

Independent Practice:

·         Students practice adding and modeling integer addition on worksheet

Closing

·         Review how to model addition on the number line

·         Adding a positive means moving (RIGHT) on the number line

·         Adding a negative means moving (LEFT) on the number line
