Opening:

We have been working on strategies to add and subtract, and even how to estimate sums and differences. Today, we will learn how to do this in a word problem.

Direct Instruction:

There are 19 carrots. 9 are eaten. How many carrots are left?

Hmm well first I’m going to draw a picture. Draw 19 carrots, and then cross of 9. Then, in my head I’m going to roll play my drawing. I see that my number is getting smaller. It went from 19 to 10, therefore I know if my answer got smaller, it has to be subtracting. It was a one time event where my number got smaller. Therefore, I’m going to subtract and my answer is 10.

Kate had 26 necklaces. She bought 7 more. How many necklaces does she have in all?

I’m going to draw a picture. Then roll play it in your head. Notice that your number is getting bigger. Since it’s a one time event getting bigger, it’s gotta be addition! And the answer is 33.

Guided Practice:

Now, let’s look at some problems together and see if it’s asking you to add or subtract.

1.     Ronny won 4 badges. By the end of the year, he earned 11 more. How many badges is that?

2.     There were 65 pigeons on the sidewalk. 7 of them flew away. How many penguins are left?

Discuss what happens if you don’t have the key words that we discussed from the chart. Tell them that’s why it’s important to always draw a picture AND roll play it in your head as well.

Independent Practice:

Complete a worksheet with addition and subtraction word problems.
