Digital Content Notebook

The students' Digital Content Notebook is where Pencil and Paper Notetaking occurs. It is exactly what it sounds like. No frills. But it is even more essential in a blended format. My colleagues and I did a lot of note-taking style modeling at the beginning of our year to set the expectations in our blended classroom.

Hand Signals

My colleagues and I use a variety of hand signals in our classroom to avoid unnecessary disruptions and maintain focus and time on task. Three common hand signals: a signal to use bathroom; a signal for needing scrap paper; and a signal for asking a presenter to speak louder. We introduce all of the hand signals to students at the beginning of the year in a community-wide Town Hall Meeting.

Stakeholder Collaboration
School of One Collaborative Planning

Daily common planning has been an essential part of the transition from a traditional to a blended classroom. In my model, I essentially co-teach with six other teachers in the large classroom, so we have valued the daily meeting very much for the first three years. We are considering scaling back on the meetings in the future. We use this time to plan logistics, review student data and lesson study.
